Inside industrial oil drums, naked women appear on monitors, swimming back and forth like creatures caught in captivity. The steady circulation of water keeps them moving, while machine noise and heartbeats echo through the metal surface. The work evokes the fairytales of mermaids, drawing on their allure as unattainable beings that embody desire, longing, and fading dreams. At the same time, it reflects on their commodified afterlives, showing how even the magical and extraordinary becomes packaged and consumed in contemporary culture. Through this tension between enchantment and exploitation, Canned Mermaid reflects on the restless and fragile pursuit of happiness permeating through our capitalistic society.
