Video sculpture (x3), oil drum, circulator pumps, 19" monitor, speakers, water, 8:00 min loop, with sound
Inside oil drums naked women swim back and forth creating associations to caged animals. Circulating water keeps them alive while drums emit the sounds of machine noise and hearts beating. The sculpture stages tales of mermaids and the unredeemed emotions, dreams and longings that the mermaid symbolises. Captured and made into a consumer product, you still see traces of her qualities, yet she is faded and weakened. As such, Canned Mermaid reflects on the never-ending craving for happiness permeating through our contemporary society.
Exhibited as part of the solo show Canned Mermaid at Randers Art Museum in 2010.
