Video sculpture, 55" screen installed in the ground, 8 min loop, no sound
Retreat is inspired by Danish Sculptor Rodulph Tegner’s work Sepulchral Monument to the Artist's Mother (1899) and depicts a woman in a state of dynamic disappearance; a body rotating on its own axis on the threshold between the visible and invisible. The static materiality in Tegner’s other works is contrasted here with something soft and unassuming, while the woman constantly disappears and returns in a sculptural cycle of rebirths. Installed in the ground the work draws on themes such as the subterranean, natural cycles and the hidden or withdrawn.
Exhibited as part of UNKNOWN LANDSCAPE at Nordkystens Kunst Triennale in 2016.
